Herbal Infusion Methods
When researching herbal medicine, you may have run into the oil infusion options. There are traditionally 2. One is a heat infusion* which takes less time and results in less potent medicinal benefits (but they will still be there!) and one is the sun method*, which takes longer, but the medicinal benefits will be stronger.
*These are my own names and am not trying to say these are the traditional names
Heat Method
This one is pretty straight forward. You will take your carrier oil, whether that be olive, sweet almond, avocado, jojoba, etc, and measure. Set aside. You will then take your herbs and place into a mason jar. The quantities re typically 1:1. 1 cup herbs to 1 cup oil. Always ensure the herbs are completely covered. Pour the oil on top of the herbs and place into a water bath on the stove. You can also use a double boiler. Set the heat to low, making sure the water begins simmering. Let simmer for as many hours as you want, but the longer the better. I typically simmer on the stove at breakfast and stop it after dinner time. Your oil infusion is ready! Strain and use however you intend to.
Sun Method
This one takes a little bit of time and preparation. Take the same proportions (1 cup herbs to 1 cup oil) and place in a mason jar. Put into a sunny window and let sun bathe for a minimum of 4 weeks. Shake every few days. Use however you want to use!
These two methods are the most popular methods in making infused oils. The variations are endless for customizations, and the healing power of whatever herbs you choose will be based on your intention! Go forth, create, and enjoy!
